Fear seems to be this big, horrible monster that is out to destroy us. It really isn't that at all. Once we understand fear, it can become a wonderful ally. So, what is fear? Fear is just a response. With everything that happens, we have a response. If someone tells a joke, we may respond with laughter. If someone gives us praise, we may respond with joy. What is fear a response to? I think fear is a response to the possibility of loss or failure. It doesn't matter if that loss is physical, mental or emotional. It is still a loss. When there is no possibility of loss, there is no fear. When fear comes up, we have some different ways that we can respond to it.
One is to run away and avoid whatever we are afraid of.
Another is to fight and try to destroy what we are afraid of.
Those are both responses that happen when we just think of fear as that big monster that is out to get us. I happen to think of fear as a friend and an ally. When I feel fear, I think of it as a friend that is watching out for me and letting me know that I have to take a closer look at things so I can avoid a loss or failure.
Whenever I start something new, there is some fear that it won't turn out the way I want it to. I don't ignore that fear and I don't let it stop me just because I feel that fear.
I look at what I am trying to do. If I think that there is a good possibility that I will succeed AND if I can handle a loss or failure, I will go ahead and do it. When I set a goal, I do not let fear stop me.
I let fear tell me that I need to pay attention to what I am doing. Fear is just my friend trying to watch out for me. I will pay attention to what fear is telling me and then I will do what I feel is right. Fear is one tool I use to help guide my life. I don't let it control my life. And, yes, I always have the choice. Is fear your friend or foe? Russ
